For the past year, speculation has swirled about which of 20 metropolitan areas Amazon will choose for its second headquarters. Now, that decision appears to be closer than ever before. Rumors have emerged that Amazon was in “advanced discussions” about opening its headquarters in Northern Virginia. However, Amazon could be having similar discussions with other finalists.
Amazon announced last year that it was looking to open a second headquarters somewhere in North America. Several state and local governments have offered Amazon millions in tax incentives to locate the new headquarters in their city. The D.C. area, and Northern Virginia., in particular, is a favorite on online betting sites to emerge the victor. Amazon has not confirmed or denied any of the rumors.
Amazon founder and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos has several connections to the Washington area, including being the owner of The Washington Post. The area is business-friendly and close to Dulles International Airport. The location is also served by major highways and a mass transit system.
Amazon’s new $5 billion headquarters would add tens of thousands of new jobs to the local economy of whatever city is chosen. The new company jobs are expected to yield an average pay of more than $100,000. It has been estimated that an additional 250,000 indirect jobs will also be created. Amazon’s main headquarters is in Seattle.
